First opened in 1909, the Santa Monica pier was the first concrete pier on the U.S. west coast as the traditional wooden piles could not withstand the local sea conditions. In 1919 as a result of rust, the pier collapsed about 2 feet under the crowds that gathered for the visits from the US Navy warships. This meant that theses deteriorating piles had to be reassessed and replaced so that it could be once again be open to the public.
